The Challenges of Culture in Project Management

Smits Karen, PhDCulture needs to be high on the project management agenda. Requiring a combination of skills, knowledge and resources, projects often attract numerous participants each carrying their own cultural background. Consequently, a great variety of cultural differences and similarities, as well as distinctive practices and differing values and interests for participation, emerge when firms and people come together in a project organization. Hence, project organizations can be perceived as cultural complex work environments.

Supported by real-life project experiences, this presentation focuses on the cultural dynamics in project management. Understanding how cultures affect your project is of key importance in reaching your project goals. Attendees will learn to recognize cultural challenges in project execution, develop essential solutions to bridge the cultural gap and gain deeper insight into the Collabyrinth. This model, designed in the Netherlands and implemented in project organizations in Europe and Latin America, illustrates and provides tools for dealing with cultural complexity in the project environment.

Speaker Karen Smits

Karen Smits, PhD is an international expert in Organizational Anthropology. She is author of the book Cross Culture Work: Practices of Collaboration in the Panama Canal Expansion Program. Portraying the results of her Ph.D. research, this book shows the people-side of project management and reveals how project participants deal with the cultural complexity in their everyday work life.

While writing the book, Karen presented at numerous, international conferences, taught in several academic courses and worked as a consultant on projects in the Netherlands, Panama and Colombia. In 2013, she received the prestigious “Highly Commended Paper Award” from the Emerald Literati Network for the academic article published in the International Journal of Managing Projects in Business. Before working as an academic, Karen was active in the field of Human Resources. Her knowledge is focused on understanding the internal dynamics in multicultural teams and how this affects collaboration in the work place.

Karen is active as Business Culture Consultant in the Latin America region, supporting companies and employees in developing cross-cultural collaboration, organizational change and growth initiatives. Lately, she has been working a lot with PMI and the project management community in general. Karen acted as speaker at national events in the Netherlands, Panama, Puerto Rico and Brazil, spoke at TEDxPuntaPaitilla (Panama) and in November 2015 she was the Keynote Speaker at the PMI São Paulo congress (750+ participants).
