Pôle Paris Centre | Webinaire | Addressing Intercultural

Gridlock refers to a traffic jam where all movement on the roadway comes to a halt. Unfortunately, the same thing can occur, metaphorically, on global teams when people from different cultures don't get along productively. When progress on a project breaks down, project leaders may feel exasperated, but they have a very important role to play.

In this webinar for PMI France, Polish and American intercultural professionals Kinga Białek and Melissa Hahn will help you understand and navigate the leadership process in cross-cultural teams. They will first present a realistic case study that illustrates the challenges of cultural complexity on modern teams. Next, they will introduce relevant research into multicultural teams by Dr. Sujin Jang and team coaching by Dr. Richard Hackman and Dr. Ruth Wageman.

Based on this research and the presenters' expertise, they will offer four suggestions for how leaders can help their team members get "unstuck" so that the project flows smoothly again and so their team is better equipped and more resilient when facing future challenges. After a short lecture, there will be time for breakout conversations so that participants can share perspectives and gain insights from each other.

Key Takeaways:
• Reframe cross-cultural misunderstanding as normal, instead of a failure where someone is to blame
• Re-imagine the team leader as an intercultural role model and facilitator, rather than someone who must have all of the answers
• Position the team leader as a more effective conduit between the team and the organization
• Identify or train "cultural brokers" within the team who can be resources and peacemakers
